Speedlink have been producing a range of PC peripherals for a while now and the results have been a little mixed. This is the first Mechanical Keyboard I’ve tried from them and thankfully it’s a top quality product.

Unlike some other mechanical keyboards, the Ultor doesn’t audibly click when you press down on it. I actually prefer this. Don’t worry, though, as you can still feel a huge difference in the response from this keyboard when compared to a standard one.

“Why would you need a mechanical keyboard?” you may ask. Well, they’re pretty responsive and if fast reactions are important in one area, it’s gaming.

Aesthetically, the Ultor is an eye catching device. When the PC isn’t on it looks pretty fetching in a metallic red aluminium body with black keys. It’s fortunately the same colour scheme I prefer for my PCs as well, which is a bonus. When on, it has a blue glowing backlight to help you find the keys in the dark with several keys (those most often used for games) highlighted in white.

The cable provided is 1.7m in length, short cables are one of my bugbears on keyboards, so the size here is pretty perfect.

As with most mechanical keyboards, be aware that the Ultor doesn’t have a number pad. It’s possible to buy them separately but since this is used mostly for gaming, it’s no great loss and it is pretty much standard not to have one with these products.

Overall, then, the Speedlink Ultor is an impressive keyboard for the price that can certainly compete with some of the big names out there.
